Native

Flowers red, large, 5 petals.

The flowers of Midwestern columbine are much smaller than their western brethren - about 1 inch and a bright red, shading to yellow in the center. The flowers droop from thin stalks and give the appearance of five "doves" belly to belly. ("Columba" is the latin word for "dove"). The head of each "dove" contains a small reservoir of nectar.
